Current Season 2008-9

Map of the Heart  by William Nicholson

Production dates: 23rd, 24th and 25th October 2008

This play, by the author of Shadowlands, is a moving and intelligent dissection of the human drama surrounding the decision of Albie, dissatisfied with his life, to turn his back on his home and family. He volunteers to go to the Sudan to assist his doctor friend, Mary, in a refugee camp. A chance happening then thrusts his relationships, and those of his family, into the glare of publicity.

Focusing on the reactions of Albie’s wife Ruth and his daughter Sally, and the presence of his wife’s brother, Bernard, this is a thought provoking play, asking questions about the way we love today.

And a Little Love Besides by Alan Plater

Production dates: 15th, 16th and 17th January 2009

The Friday Fellowship, a group under the leadership of the Reverend Carter, meets to organize various Parish matters. When the play opens Mr Briggs is delivering a talk on the Youth Club’s visit to the Lake District , during which, it transpires, an “incident” occurred. How the various members of the group respond to the revelation of the incident gives an insight into the true nature of morality, forgiveness and love for one’s fellow man.

Set in a vicarage in the 1970s, but with a message relevant to every age and with characters recognisable from all walks of life, this is a funny and touching play.

Kindertransport  by Diane Samuels

Production dates:  26th, 27th and 28th March 2009

In 1938 nine-year old Eva is one of the thousands of children sent from pre-War Germany to Britain , to escape the growing menace, and where she is taken in by foster mother Lil. In the early 1990s Evelyn’s daughter Faith is leaving home to move into her own flat. Rummaging in the attic she discovers some old letters which lead her to question her mother’s, and therefore her own, identity.

This is a play both about the pain and passion of mother/daughter relationships and a powerful contribution to Holocaust literature.

A Laughing Matter  by April De Angelis

 Production dates: 11th, 12thand 13th June 2009

It is 1773 at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane …the crowd is getting restless...the leading man is unconscious, but the show must go on.

This irreverent version of real-life events tells the story of David Garrick, Dr Johnson, Oliver Goldsmith and a new play calls She Stoops to Conquer. Caught between financial pressures and artistic ambition, Garrick must decide if he can risk staging a play which could make or break his career.
